Game of Thrones Dubrovnik walking map: the 2-hour self-guided route

Game of Thrones Dubrovnik walking map: the 2-hour self-guided route

What is the best walking route for Game of Thrones locations in Dubrovnik?

Start at Pile Gate (8am for the walls and Lovrijenac), walk the walls to Minčeta Tower, descend to St Dominic Street, continue to the Old Harbour, then through the Rector's Palace area and the walk of shame staircase. The full circuit covers 8 major filming locations in approximately 2–3 hours.

Your free self-guided route through King’s Landing

This page gives you a practical, ordered route through every significant Game of Thrones filming location in Dubrovnik’s Old Town, written for visitors doing it independently. The route covers eight core locations, takes 2–3 hours at a relaxed pace (longer if you add the full city walls circuit), and requires no special access or equipment beyond standard paid admissions to the walls and Lovrijenac.

Read the relevant sections of King’s Landing filming spots and every GoT filming location in Dubrovnik before you go. Download screenshots from the scenes you most want to match — any GoT wiki has episode-specific stills. With these on your phone you will have a self-guided experience comparable to a group tour.

Before you start: timing and tickets

Best start time: 8am. The city walls open at 8am in peak season and Lovrijenac opens shortly after. You will have the walls, the Blackwater view, and the Lovrijenac ramparts largely to yourself before tour groups arrive around 9:30–10am.

Tickets needed:

  • City walls entry (includes Minčeta Tower): approximately €35 in peak season
  • Lovrijenac Fortress: separate ticket (supplement or included in Dubrovnik Pass)
  • All street-level locations are free

What to bring: Water, sun protection (the walls are fully exposed), a fully charged phone with downloaded screenshots for comparison.

Crowds note: In July and August, the filming locations in the streets below are busy by 10am and very crowded by noon. The early-morning start is not optional if you want workable photographs.

Stop 1: Pile Gate (King’s Landing entrance, Seasons 2–8)

Begin at Pile Gate — the western entrance to the Old Town, accessible from the main bus stops and Brsalje Square. The medieval gate with its outer and inner archway was used repeatedly as King’s Landing’s main city entrance. Characters arriving at or departing from the capital walked through versions of this gate throughout the series.

Standing in the outer gate (the drawbridge side), look towards the harbour below Lovrijenac — this is the view Tyrion had when inspecting the city’s defences in Season 2. From here, turn left to reach Lovrijenac.

Time at this stop: 10 minutes. The gate itself is brief; you are really positioning for Lovrijenac next.

Stop 2: Lovrijenac Fortress (the Red Keep, Seasons 2–8)

From Pile Gate, descend the stone steps to the coastal path that runs south-west below the walls. After about 200 metres, a path branches left across the bridge to Lovrijenac.

The fortress exterior is the Red Keep. Buy the ticket at the entrance (or show your Dubrovnik Pass) and take the inner stairway to the upper ramparts. The views from the top are the views you see establishing the Red Keep in many shots — the Adriatic below, the city walls to the east, the main harbour in the distance.

The lower courtyard was used for scenes of characters entering and leaving the keep. The interior architecture is simpler than the Red Keep sets in Belfast — this is the exterior shell only.

Time at this stop: 30–45 minutes to explore fully; 15 minutes if you are moving quickly.

Photography tip: Morning light hits the sea-facing wall of Lovrijenac from the east. The view back towards the city walls is best photographed from the upper ramparts in the morning.

Stop 3: Western walls above Pile Gate (Blackwater Bay, Season 2)

Return to Pile Gate and enter the city walls circuit. The section of wall immediately inside the gate, running west towards Bokar Tower, is the Blackwater section. Looking down from these walls towards the sea below Lovrijenac gives you the view from which the wildfire sequence was shot.

The path along this section is one of the most dramatic on the full walls circuit. Bokar Tower sits above the sea channel between the walls and Lovrijenac — the location of Blackwater Bay in Season 2.

If you are doing the full walls circuit (recommended), continue from here around the full 2-kilometre loop to Minčeta Tower. If you are short on time, you can exit back through Pile Gate and navigate to Minčeta via the street below.

Time at this stop: 20 minutes on this section alone; 75 minutes for the full walls circuit.

Stop 4: Minčeta Tower (House of the Undying, Season 2)

Minčeta is the large circular tower at the northern apex of the walls, about halfway around the full circuit. In Season 2, this is the exterior of the House of the Undying — the warlock stronghold where Daenerys’ dragons were held.

The approach from the south (walking the walls from Pile Gate) shows the tower exactly as it appears in the scene where Daenerys approaches and enters the building. The distinctive crenellated profile of Minčeta is unmistakeable.

The view from the top is excellent: south over the Stradun, east over the city’s rooftops, north over the hills.

Time at this stop: 15 minutes.

Stop 5: St Dominic Street (Littlefinger and Small Council area, Season 2–4)

Descend from the walls (exit at St John’s Fortress on the eastern side, near the harbour) and walk north up Ulica Sv. Dominika — the street running along the inside of the eastern walls. This is the street used for scenes near Littlefinger’s establishment and the Small Council chambers.

The Dominican Monastery at the northern end of the street has a courtyard visible through the gate. The stone arcade and well in the centre appeared in background shots during city scenes.

This street is quieter than the Stradun and retains the functional medieval character that made it useful as a filming location.

Time at this stop: 15 minutes to walk the full length; longer if you visit the monastery museum.

Stop 6: Old Harbour (dockside scenes, Seasons 2–8)

From the southern end of St Dominic Street, continue through the city gate onto the Old Harbour quay. The enclosed harbour with its stone walls and the cliff above was used as King’s Landing’s port throughout the series.

The most useful photography angle: standing on the quay and looking back towards the city gate through which you just walked, with the walls rising above. This matches several arrival and departure scenes from the show.

The Lokrum ferry departs from this harbour — worth noting if you are combining this walk with an afternoon Iron Throne visit.

Time at this stop: 15 minutes.

Stop 7: Rector’s Palace courtyard (council area, Season 2)

Return through the harbour gate and walk west along the main promenade to the Rector’s Palace (Knežev Dvor). The outer courtyard and entrance arcade were used for establishing shots of the council chambers area. The Renaissance arches and stone paving are visible in background shots of several scenes.

The palace is now a museum (separate ticket) if you want to see the interior. The courtyard can be viewed from the entrance without buying a museum ticket.

Time at this stop: 10 minutes exterior; 45 minutes with museum.

Stop 8: Walk of shame staircase (Season 5 finale)

From the Rector’s Palace, walk west past the Cathedral and look for the steps rising steeply from the street on the south-western face of the Old Town hill, near the Ethnographic Museum. These are the stairs used for Cersei’s walk of shame in the Season 5 finale.

There is no sign. The stairs are a functional public route from the lower streets to the walls level above. They are steep, narrow, and built from the same rough stone as every other external staircase in the Old Town. You will recognise them from the scene.

Time at this stop: 10 minutes.

Optional extension: Stradun photo points

The Stradun — Dubrovnik’s main limestone-paved street running east–west — appeared in wide crowd shots of King’s Landing’s main thoroughfare. The two best photography points are: looking east from the Small Onofrio Fountain (the western end) towards the Bell Tower, and looking west from the Bell Tower with the Franciscan Monastery in the background.

Frequently asked questions about the Game of Thrones walking map

Can I follow this route in reverse?

Yes. Starting from the walk of shame staircase near the Ethnographic Museum and working west works equally well. The only consideration is that Lovrijenac faces east, so morning light from the east is optimal from the Pile Gate side.

What is the terrain like on the route?

The Old Town streets are stone-paved and uneven. The city walls involve significant stair climbing at several points, particularly at Minčeta Tower. Lovrijenac has steep exterior steps. None of this is technically difficult, but the route is not suitable for pushchairs or anyone with significant mobility limitations.

Do I need mobile data for this route?

The written route above can be downloaded and read offline. Screenshots from the show are the only supplementary material needed, and these can be downloaded to your camera roll before leaving your accommodation.

Can I photograph filming locations commercially?

The Old Town is a public space and public streets can be photographed freely. Lovrijenac and the city walls are paid attractions but have no restrictions on personal or editorial photography. If you are shooting commercially, check with the City of Dubrovnik’s permits office.

How do I handle the heat on this route in summer?

In July and August, midday temperatures in the Old Town regularly exceed 30°C on the exposed stone streets. The walls in particular are fully exposed. The 8am start is strongly recommended — you will finish the core route before the worst heat. Carry at least a litre of water per person.

Is this route suitable for non-fans?

Yes. The route doubles as a comprehensive tour of the Old Town’s most significant monuments — Lovrijenac, the city walls, the Dominican Monastery, the Old Harbour, and the Rector’s Palace. The GoT context adds a layer of interest without requiring any fan knowledge to enjoy the locations themselves.
