Parking in Dubrovnik: everything you need to know

Where is the best place to park in Dubrovnik?

Ilijina Glavica park-and-ride above the Old Town is the most practical option — paid parking with a free shuttle bus down to the city walls. Gruž harbour has a large car park good for ferry connections. The worst option is trying to park near the Pile Gate in summer: queues, limited spaces, and €3–5 per hour. Book accommodation with private parking if possible.

The parking reality in Dubrovnik

Let’s be direct: parking near the Dubrovnik Old Town in summer is genuinely difficult. The city was not designed for cars, the historic centre is pedestrianised, and the volume of visitors arriving by car, coach, and cruise ship overwhelms the available infrastructure in July and August.

If you can avoid bringing a car into the central area — or if you can arrive early in the morning and leave before noon — life gets significantly easier. This guide covers all the practical options in detail.

Option 1: Ilijina Glavica park-and-ride (best for day visitors)

Located on the hill above the Old Town, Ilijina Glavica is Dubrovnik’s official park-and-ride facility and the most sensible option for visitors arriving by car who want to spend time in the Old Town.

Practical details:

  • Location: on Ulica od Batale, above the Pile Gate area (accessible from the main D8 road)
  • Capacity: approximately 600 spaces
  • Cost: around €1.50–2 per hour; daily maximum around €20–25
  • Shuttle bus: free shuttle runs between the car park and the Pile Gate — a few minutes’ drive down the hill
  • Shuttle frequency: every 5–10 minutes during peak hours

The shuttle makes this the most practical choice for those who don’t want to walk down the steep hill to the walls. In July–August, spaces fill by 9–10am. Arrive before 8:30am to be sure of a space.

Tip: if spaces at Ilijina Glavica are full (shown on electronic signs on the approach road), do not queue — the Gruž option below is your next best choice.

Option 2: Gruž harbour car park

The large car park adjacent to the ferry port and bus station at Gruž is less convenient for the Old Town but has more capacity and is better suited to longer stays.

Practical details:

  • Location: at Gruž harbour, ~3 km west of the Old Town
  • Cost: approximately €1.50–2 per hour; daily rates around €15–20
  • Getting to the Old Town: bus line 1a from Gruž to Pile Gate (€2, 15 minutes) or taxi (€12–15)

The Gruž car park makes most sense if you’re arriving by ferry, if your accommodation is in the Gruž area, or if you’re combining the Old Town visit with a day-trip ferry. It is also much larger and less likely to be completely full, even in peak season.

If you’re staying 2+ nights and arriving by car, the most comfortable solution is to book accommodation with private parking. Most hotels in Lapad — the main hotel district — have their own car parks or secure garages.

Typical costs: €10–20 per night, sometimes included in the room rate. This is comparable to or cheaper than public parking across multiple days, and removes the daily anxiety of finding a space.

Hotels inside the Old Town walls cannot offer parking — the area is inaccessible by car. If you’re staying inside the walls, you’ll need to drop your bags at the nearest accessible point and carry them (often up stairs) to your accommodation.

There are a small number of paid parking spaces on the approach road to the Pile Gate — Zone 1 parking at the highest rates (€3–5 per hour). These spaces are attractive because of proximity to the Old Town, but:

  • They are almost always full by mid-morning in summer
  • The approach road becomes congested with cars queuing for spaces that don’t exist
  • Traffic wardens are active and fines for illegal parking are issued frequently

If you see a space here in June or September, take it. In July–August, do not waste time looking.

Option 5: Lapad area street parking

The residential streets of Lapad have some free and some paid on-street parking. If you’re staying in Lapad, your hotel’s private garage is the better option. If you’re just passing through, the public paid spaces in Lapad are zone 2 or 3 pricing (cheaper than Zone 1) and generally have better availability than the Old Town environs.

Parking and the ferry

If you’re taking a ferry from Gruž to the Elaphiti Islands and want to leave your car while you’re away for the day, the Gruž car park is designed for exactly this. It’s attended, paid, and secure. This is also the place to leave your car if you’re catching an early-morning catamaran to Korčula or Mljet.

Note: taking a car on the Elaphiti car ferry is possible but the islands have very limited roads and almost no parking infrastructure. Leave the car in Dubrovnik.

The Neum corridor and parking on the drive north

If you’re driving north from Dubrovnik toward Split, you’ll pass through the Neum corridor (or use the Pelješac Bridge to bypass it). The bridge option is recommended — it avoids the B&H border crossing queues and keeps you on Croatian roads throughout. Once on the Pelješac peninsula, there is free roadside parking at most viewpoints and village centres.

Practical tips for parking in Dubrovnik

  • Arrive early: before 9am, you have a reasonable chance of a central space. After 10am in peak season, assume you will be redirected to Gruž or Ilijina Glavica.
  • Check electronic signs: the main approach roads to Dubrovnik display electronic parking availability signs. Trust them — they’re updated in real time.
  • Download a parking app: EasyPark and ParkMobile work in Dubrovnik and allow payment by phone without needing coins. You can also extend your session remotely.
  • Never park in bus stop zones or in front of gates: enforcement is regular and fines are €50–100.
  • Disabled parking: Blue Badge/EU disabled parking permits are valid. Dedicated spaces exist at Gruž and near the Pile Gate.

Frequently asked questions about parking in Dubrovnik

Is there parking at the Dubrovnik cable car?

The cable car lower terminal is near the Pile Gate. There is very limited roadside parking nearby but no dedicated cable car car park. The best approach is to park at Ilijina Glavica and take the short shuttle to the Pile Gate, from where the cable car terminal is a 5-minute walk.

Can I park overnight at Ilijina Glavica?

Yes — Ilijina Glavica operates 24 hours. Overnight parking is charged at the standard hourly rate with no overnight discount. If you’re doing a day trip the following morning, this is a viable option, though the daily maximum makes it more expensive than hotel parking for multi-night stays.

Is there CCTV at the Dubrovnik car parks?

The main car parks (Ilijina Glavica, Gruž) have CCTV coverage. As with any tourist destination, do not leave valuables visible in your car. Rental cars are particularly targeted in some coastal areas.

What happens if I overstay my paid parking time?

A penalty ticket (kazna) will be issued, typically €50–75 for overstaying. You can often pay online within a few days. Repeated violations can lead to clamping, particularly on the approach roads to the Old Town.

How do I pay for parking in Dubrovnik?

At most car parks: ticket machines accepting coins, notes, and in many cases credit/debit cards. On-street parking in paid zones uses parking meters (often card-accepting) or the EasyPark/ParkMobile apps. Grab the app before you arrive so you can extend your session remotely if needed.
