Šipan Island: cycling, olive groves, and authentic Elaphiti life

What is Šipan Island like and is it worth visiting from Dubrovnik?

Šipan is the largest and least-visited inhabited Elaphiti island. It has two villages connected by 6 km of olive groves, a 16th-century Ragusan palace in Suđurađ, good swimming from rocks, and an unhurried pace that makes it the most authentically Dalmatian island near Dubrovnik. No sandy beach, but excellent for cycling and walking.

The Elaphiti island that most visitors overlook

Šipan is the largest of the three inhabited Elaphiti Islands but receives a fraction of the visitors that Lopud does. This is partly because it takes longer to reach (about 1 hour 20 minutes from Gruž on the Jadrolinija ferry) and partly because it lacks the sandy beach that draws day-trippers to Lopud. But for visitors who value cycling through olive groves, authentic village life, and Adriatic peace, Šipan is the island in the Elaphiti archipelago most worth seeking out.

The island has two ferry ports and two villages. Suđurađ, in the east, has a 16th-century Ragusan governor’s palace and fortress — one of the finest examples of the Ragusan Republic’s summer architecture anywhere in the Elaphiti. Šipanska Luka, in the west, is a small harbour village surrounded by nothing but sea and old stone. The valley connecting them — about 6 kilometres of gently rolling track through ancient olive groves — is what you come to Šipan for.

What to do on Šipan

Cycling between the villages

The cycling route between Suđurađ and Šipanska Luka is Šipan’s defining activity. The track runs through the agricultural valley that occupies the centre of the island, passing olive groves (many of the trees are several hundred years old), small vineyards, and a section of pine forest. The terrain is gentle — the valley floor has modest undulations — and the route is clearly defined.

Bicycle hire is available at both ferry ports in season. Most visitors take the ferry to Suđurađ (east), cycle west to Šipanska Luka for lunch or a swim, and then either cycle back or catch the ferry from the western port.

Suđurađ: the governor’s palace

The fortified governor’s palace in Suđurađ is the most architecturally significant building in the Elaphiti. Built in the 16th century by a wealthy Ragusan merchant family (the Skočibuha family), the complex combines a residential palace with a defensive tower and represents some of the best-preserved late-Ragusan architecture outside Dubrovnik.

Standing on the waterfront at Suđurađ, the palace is immediately visible. The combination of defensive tower, loggia, and chapel in a single waterfront complex was characteristic of how Ragusan noble families built their summer residences. The views from the tower take in the harbour and the hills behind.

Swimming and snorkelling

Šipan has no sandy beach, but the rocky shores around Šipanska Luka on the sheltered northern side of the island have clear, warm water and are consistently good for swimming and snorkelling. The sea grass meadows around the island are rich in marine life — octopus, moray eel, sea bream, and various reef fish are common sightings for anyone with a mask.

The south-facing shore on the east side of the island has more exposed conditions and is better for experienced swimmers.

The 12th-century church of Sv. Mihajlo

A short walk above Šipanska Luka, the pre-Romanesque church of Sv. Mihajlo dates from the 12th century and is one of the oldest surviving structures on the island. The small stone building is set among olive trees on the hillside above the harbour. The walk takes about 20 minutes from the ferry landing.

Walking on the island’s headlands

Beyond the main valley path, tracks lead to the rocky headlands on both the northern and southern coasts. These offer dramatic views of the open sea and the other Elaphiti islands. The north-east headland above Suđurađ is particularly good for views looking back towards Dubrovnik.

Where to eat on Šipan

Konoba Kod Marka in Šipanska Luka is the island’s most consistently recommended restaurant — fresh grilled fish, octopus, local wine, tables on the harbour. It operates seasonally and is closed in winter. Prices are lower than Dubrovnik or Lopud.

In Suđurađ, a couple of small konobe near the ferry dock serve similar menus. The quality and consistency of the Suđurađ restaurants varies more than Kod Marka — ask locally what is open.

How to get to Šipan from Dubrovnik

Jadrolinija ferry from Gruž Port departs daily year-round. The ferry stops at Koločep and Lopud before reaching Šipan. Journey time to Suđurađ (east) is approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. To Šipanska Luka (west) is a few minutes longer.

Krilo catamaran serves Šipan on most daily journeys. Faster than the ferry — about 45–55 minutes to Suđurađ. Reserve seats online in advance for peak season.

The ferry schedule means a Šipan day trip is most comfortable arriving on the first or second morning boat and returning on the late afternoon service. Check timetables at Jadrolinija.hr before planning.

Combining Šipan with other islands

Šipan can be combined with Lopud in a single long day trip — take the ferry to Lopud first, spend the morning on Šunj Beach, then catch the mid-morning ferry from Lopud to Šipan for lunch and a cycle. Return to Dubrovnik on the late afternoon service. This requires checking the timetable carefully to make sure connections work.

Alternatively, join an island-hopping tour that includes Šipan. Most three-island tours stop at Šipan for 45–60 minutes, which is enough for a swim and a walk around Šipanska Luka.

The island hopping from Dubrovnik guide and the Elaphiti Islands guide cover the options in more detail.

Staying overnight on Šipan

Šipan rewards an overnight stay more than any other Elaphiti island. The accommodation is limited — a few guesthouses and private apartments in both villages — but the experience of staying here is genuinely special. By 6pm when the last boats have left, Šipan reverts to something that feels entirely unchanged from 50 years ago.

Book well ahead for July and August, when the small number of rooms is quickly taken.

The 7-day South Dalmatia no-car itinerary includes Šipan as an overnight stop.

Frequently asked questions about Šipan Island

How long should I spend on Šipan for a day trip?

A minimum of 4–5 hours is needed to cycle between the villages, eat lunch at Šipanska Luka, and have a swim. Arriving on the 9am ferry and leaving on the 4–5pm return gives enough time. Check the specific timetable for the day you plan to visit.

Is Šipan suitable for non-cyclists?

Yes. You do not need to cycle on Šipan. The valley walk (Suđurađ to Šipanska Luka on foot) takes about 1.5 hours. Šipanska Luka is perfectly satisfying as a single destination without needing to cycle anywhere.

Are there shops on Šipan?

A small grocery shop and bakery operate in Šipanska Luka. Suđurađ has a similar basic provision. Do not rely on buying sunscreen, specialist items, or anything beyond basic provisions.

How does Šipan compare to Lopud?

Lopud has the sandy beach and more developed tourism infrastructure. Šipan is larger, quieter, more historical, and better for cycling and walking. The honest comparison: Lopud wins on beach; Šipan wins on authenticity and architectural interest. Many experienced Adriatic travellers prefer Šipan.

Is there a doctor or pharmacy on Šipan?

No. Medical services are not available on Šipan. For anything beyond minor first aid, return to Dubrovnik. Bring any prescription medication you need.

Can you kayak around Šipan?

Yes. Šipan’s sheltered northern coast and the sea caves on the east side are popular with sea kayakers. Several Dubrovnik operators offer full-day kayak tours that include Šipan. The best day trips from Dubrovnik page covers some of these options.
